Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in utilizing replay technology.
Replay systems will make its debut at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.
Competitors are granted the right to question certain calls made by the chair umpire, mirroring the protocol already in place at both the US Open and the Australian Open.
This innovation is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles contests.
This step comes just a year after the AELTC introduced ELC, which brought an end to the longstanding tradition of line officials.
Scope of Challenges
Players cannot to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can request the official to re-examine specific situations, such as:
- Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a shot made contact with an rival's racket or body during play.
- Possible hindrance end of a rally.
Notably, there is no cap on the amount of challenges a competitor can initiate.
Case in Point
A recent incident took place in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the review system against Jack Draper.
Draper conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."
The umpire viewed a replay and ruled the player was guilty of interference, awarding the rally to Medvedev.
Growing Trend
Video reviews are not new for major tournaments. It has been in use at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system in place at every one of its events.
Other Changes
A further innovation at The Championships this year will be the addition of graphical cues on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This addresses instances where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain whether a ball was out or in.
In other news, with precisely 100 days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
