Trump's Woke Warning Misses Europe's True Threat: Economic Stagnation.

Donald Trump's security policy document offers a misguided assessment of the European Union. The document asserts that open-border policies and so-called "woke" agendas represent an grave risk to European civilization. However, this argument is based on a serious misreading of the reality. The true challenge facing Europe is not societal but economic and technological lag.

The Stark Growth Gap Separating the US and Europe

The data reveal a stark picture. Between 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by eighty-seven percent, compared to a paltry 13.5% increase for the EU. Over this period, EU GDP per capita fell from 76.5% to just half of the US level. Strikingly, even Mississippi now has a higher per capita income than major EU nations like France and Italy.

Today, about half of the world’s 50 largest tech companies are US-based, while only four are European.

The Innovation Shortfall: The Core Question

This widening disparity is driven by superior productivity growth in the United States, fueled by technological innovation and higher total factor productivity. The scene of world technology leadership is decidedly US-centric. In the last five decades, hundreds of American startups have scaled into enterprises valued at over ten billion dollars, compared with only fourteen in Europe.

This gap prompts a pressing question: In the race for tomorrow's sectors like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, where does the EU positioned? Experts widely concede it is largely a two-horse race involving the US and China, with European nations entering at a clear disadvantage.

Root Causes of the Continent's Technological Lag

A number of key reasons account for this technological divide.

  • Venture Capital: The United States has a far deeper and agile system for funding startups. The EU has yet to establish a genuine unified investment market, which caps the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Complex and divided rules hinder Europe. A American entrepreneur can introduce a product under one regulatory framework to access a market of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a bigger population, is divided among 27 separate systems, creating significant market obstacles.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on risk-taking vary greatly. In some EU nations, business failure was historically viewed with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Defense Spending: The US benefits from a deeply integrated innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. Europe's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has weakened its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Reasons for Hopefulness

Despite these challenges, there are reasons for hope. European leaders are growing more conscious of the existential challenge and have begun to propose substantial change. Notable reports on EU competitiveness and the single market point to the need for major changes.

With the right policies and rule changes, these assets might enable much higher levels of commercial innovation.

The continent retains significant advantages: high-quality human capital, top-tier education systems, and premier research institutions. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these elements could unleash a surge of venture creation.

Importantly, even if the EU does not become the leader in creating next-generation technologies, it can still dramatically increase productivity by implementing and tailoring innovations from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

The European Union now faces a decisive crossroads. As the saying goes, decline often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, the continent's technological decline has been gradual. But, if it fails to take bold steps to tackle its deep-seated problems, today's slow erosion could give way to a sudden and irreversible decline in global economic relevance.
