Space Traveler Shares Mental Health Struggle After Deluge of Backlash After Historic Trip

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has opened up regarding her struggle with mental health after enduring a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.

Amanda Nguyen – celebrated as a researcher and activist – was part of the brief journey to space earlier this year, which also carried well-known figures.

The high-profile flight was met with derision by some, who questioned its cost and environmental footprint.

Reflecting on the situation, Ms. Nguyen, who made history as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the intense backlash buried her dreams under an “avalanche of misogyny”.

“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a public message, describing a check-in call from a mission companion in the days following the journey.

She portrayed the press attention and digital reaction as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she confessed. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”

Overshadowed by Sexism

The researcher, who has dedicated her work to gynecological science and performed experiments during the flight, said every professional achievement – including her studies and extensive preparation to the historic significance of her heritage – was drowned out under the deluge of sexist vitriol.

She is widely recognized for her tireless campaigning fighting for justice for sexual assault survivors.

Her own aspiration for spaceflight was paused after an attack during her college days, leading to a protracted legal battle.

A Path to Recovery

In the time since fulfilling her dream, she has stated the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she expressed gratitude the well-wishers whose support helped save her. “You were my salvation,” she affirmed.

She noted that despite the negativity, important benefits had resulted from the experience, such as spotlight on her scientific work and new advocacy opportunities.

The Historic Journey

The computer-piloted spacecraft lifted off from its launch site in the spring, carrying the historic roster on a short trip that exceeded the Kármán line of space.

The team of pioneers also featured experts in various fields.

The company behind the mission is a private space firm launched by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
