Players of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 are buzzing about the possibility of a surprising battle featuring a malevolent incarnation of Esquie. This speculation emerged after the developer revealed a complimentary significant expansion filled with new enemies and mysteries.
What Sparked the Theories?
Newly released concept art seems to depict a young protagonist atop the camp ally advancing on a veiled enemy. This image strongly hints that Esquie could have a pivotal part in the forthcoming content.
Adding to the mystery, voice actors including the performer behind Esquie have been spotted recording new dialogue. Previously, he was shown as a kind-hearted presence who provided comfort and wine to expeditioners. Yet, hints suggested a hidden powerful side—even a quote where he remarked, “Bad things occur we become angry.”
Community Response and Online Hints
On online forums, players are enthusiastically discussing the prospect of battling a dark Esquie. One commenter exclaimed, “Time for the ultimate final challenge: Esquie.”
Moreover, the studio changed its profile picture to a sinister depiction of a shadowy figure bearing a striking resemblance to Esquie. Although this could be tied to a Halloween event or fan art project, the crimson gaze and jagged mane make it difficult not to envision a threatening Esquie.

Deeper Lore Theories
A number of theorists suggest that a key character, the sibling of the protagonists, may have created a evil version of the being during their youth. According to this idea, Clea may have used this painting to scare Verso, and now it could be pursuing expeditions in a specific region of the world.
Such speculation fits established story elements, as Clea has before interfered with the realm, altering figures and orchestrating schemes. Furthermore, the return of Clea’s actress supports the notion that her role will expand in the DLC.
Final Thoughts
Might these ideas be exaggerated? Perhaps the online art is just holiday-themed fun, and Esquie will stay his gentle self in the upcoming update. However, with so many hints suggesting a darker turn, fans are keenly awaiting what revelations await in Expedition 33’s newest chapter.
